BackFlow Preventer

What is a Backflow Preventer?

  • A backflow preventer keeps water-based systems on a property, ensuring water only travels in one direction from the water main into the residential or commercial system’s pipes

  • There are different types of BackFlow Preventers used for sprinkler systems,

    • For residential or commercial sprinkler systems, either a Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB) or a Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) is commonly used, however, the PVB is most common for sprinkler systems

A BackFlow Preventer prohibits the contamination of your personal water supply…

In most cases, your sprinkler system & drinking water supply share the same connection to the city’s water line. Occasionally, sprinkler systems can draw water backward—a process known as backflow—which may introduce contaminants into your home's drinking water if your BFP is not functioning properly, posing potential health risks.

A BFP is delicate & requires regular inspection & maintenance to function properly. Failure to maintain these units annually can result in costly fixes.

In Colorado’s harsh winters, a BFP is particularly vulnerable to damage if the irrigation system is not properly winterized or if the device is exposed to extreme weather conditions over extended periods of time.

Not all residential & commercial sprinkler systems are required to have a BFP in Colorado. However, each county & or local ordinance can differ. To ensure compliance, consult your local county officials for the most up-to-date code & requirements.
